Design Studio 2
Project 1: Famous People, Familiar Faces - Diagrammatic Abstraction
This is the first project given to us which requires students to ‘learn from precedents’ (this assignment also relates to the History of Modern Architecture) by interpretation and exploration of solids, planes, lines and style in architectural design.
In this assignment we were required to form a group of 5 member and we had to research on the master of architecture and his building. The one we choose is Alvar Aalto and his builing Villa Mairea. A research come out with 10 concept model and a full set of architecture drawing of Villa Mairea.
This project had exposed me to modern architects and their works which I had not the least idea about before this. At the first I was not really understand what the 'concept' mean, is it the form or the purpose of the design that Alvar Aalto made. But this assignment exposed me to the concept in architecture and what is the most importhing we need to concern about in design.
PROJECT 2A Introduction to Site Analysis + Picnic Pavilion
For the preparation of the following projects, we had visited to Eagle Ranch Resort, Port Dickson. We were divided into 2 group to carry out different site analysis where we need build a picnic pavilion and a retreat house at there. As we were divided in 2 group, we were assigned to analize the slope area and other is beach area.
After that we were divided to analize different area and my group was doing the animal part. Well I can say is taing the photo of animal is not easy than I tough. It was hard to capture them espacially the bird and we need to suffer the 'attack' of mosquito.
In a group of 2, we were given another task to design a picnic pavilion on the site. My partner and I had chosen Wendell Berry, an environmental activist as our client. Some research and analysis had been conducted to understand our client's character and his requirements.
The pavilion should be designed with a maximum volume of 30m3 with the purpose of eating and relaxing. We were design a pavilion which using the material; bamboo as our client is a person who like nature, old fashion and low-profile. So we use some bamboo to create a wall in order to make the people can't see him clearly from outside.
In this assignment, it helps us to enhance analysing skills not only for the site, but also of the client and the concept. We also learnt a thing from this assignment '' we can't do a design which based on the appearance only, every this must have it's own function'' 。
In the final project, we were required to design a retreat house for the same client in project 2 individually. In this retreat, we must design with a bedroom, toilet, bathroom and other space that my client need. This project also related to Building Construction final assignment which we need to show the detail and the way how we build it. At last I design a house which lift from ground 3 meter as I want him have the better view to nature and it also can protect the ground.
Throughout this project, I found that user requirements are important in design development. We need to analize the client and think what is the primary need of him. Beside that also need to concern about how to represent client by design this house and is it suitable for him. Lastly, I found that the presentation board and skill is important. As we can't just send the information by speaking, we need to make other understnd when they read the board and know what is the information we want to convey. I would like to thanks my tutor, who always guide me and give me some building which related to my concept to explore at every tutorial. This made me had some idea and get some inspiration by other design.
