BUILDING SCIENCE 2

This module is the module that teach us about lighting and acoustic. By teaching us about the lighting and acoustic design strategy which also make us to analyse and do the calculation such as daylight factor, lumen method, reverbration time, transmition loss and also to calculate how many light the space need. Knowing these knowledge is helping us in design our studio project.

Project 1

Lighting & Acoustic Performance Evaluation

In this project we were form a group of 5 people to choose a place and analyse it the lighting and acoustic quality of the building. The place we choose is FlingStone where located in SS15 subang. Through the study of the lighting and acoustic we were able gather the data of the building. After gather the data were calculate the lumen method, daylight factor, reverberation time, transmission loss and compile to a report and 2 A3 board of sumary of the data.

Learning outcomes of the project

-  Able to produce a complete documentation on analysis of space in relation to lighting requirement eg. Natural and artificial lighting. (Pictures, sketches and drawing) and analysis of factors which effects the lighting design of a space.

-  Explore and apply understanding of building physic eg. Lighting towards building / construction technology and building materials on existing building projects.

-  Basic understanding and analysis of lighting layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations eg. Lumen method and PSALI.

- Basic understanding and analysis of acoustic design layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations eg. Reverberation time and sound transmission coefficient.

Project 2: Integration Project with Studio V

This is an individual project. In this project, we need to choose 2 space of our design studio final project ( community library) and identify the artificial light and daytlight strategies (PSALI) of 2 spaces. The studio V final project is create a community library where located in Jalan Petaling, Petaling Street there and the spaces that I identified is the Cafe of the library and study area.

Learning Outcome

- To be able to show understanding of artificial lighting and daylighting strategies (PSALI) in their final design.

- To be able to solve design problems in relation to sustainability issues (natural lighting, site analysis).

- To be able to design spaces incorporating artificial and daylighting (when necessary).
